The 8th International Conference on New Business Models continues to serve as a leading platform for spirited dialogue and debate in the field of sustainable business models. Embedding sustainability principles within the different components of business models remains essential for changing the way our society addresses the most pressing challenges. The beginning of this decade has transformed the way we used to live, work, interact, do business and co-exist. While the impact of the COVID 19 crisis is still ongoing, we gradually reflect on our collective preparedness to navigate through global challenges including epidemics and pandemics, wars, migration/refugee crises, climate change and various other social and environmental issues that we might face.

The role that partnerships play in the development and strengthening of businesses is undebatable: not only because businesses can hardly survive in isolation, but also because collaboration among different actors can help tackle environmental and societal issues that are outside company boundaries and expertise. NBM2023 will open a space to think and conceptualize, but also reflect, on the importance of such collaboration and partnerships to create a more resilient, regenerative, and sustainable economy and society. This, of course, includes businesses that are not only committed to addressing and respecting sustainability principles, but that are also conscious about their level of preparedness to face and react to more adverse and uncertain conditions.

The 8th NBM conference took place at the School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University, from June 21st to 23. For this conference, we have received 203 submissions, of which 171 were accepted for presentation in the conference program. This year the conference used a hybrid format, welcoming 273 participants onsite in Maastricht while 51 participants attended online. Participants are affiliated to 41 different countries. The conference featured 15 different conference tracks exploring new business models from a system, sectoral and organizational level, new business models and organizational impact and theoretical and methodological foundations for investigating new business models. Our conference program also included 2 plenary sessions and 2 workshops.

It was our pleasure hosting this conference in Maastricht, and we look forward to seeing this community growing and contributing to the ongoing scientific conversation of new and the next generation of business models.
